About Dr. Schiappa

Michael Schiappa, D.D.S., is a distinguished oral and maxillofacial surgeon with a unique background in biomedical engineering. 

He graduated magna cum laude from Bucknell University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering while playing Division 1 lacrosse. 

He then pursued his Doctor of Dental Surgery at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. He graduated first in his class, receiving the Dr. Dennis Lee and Dr. Frank T. Van Woert Scholarships for his clinical and academic accomplishments and earning membership in the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society and Pierre Fauchard Academy. 

Dr. Schiappa then completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at the University of Illinois Chicago, where he served as chief resident at the University of Illinois Hospital and at Jesse Brown VA Hospital.

Education

Dr. Schiappa’s engineering education provides a cutting-edge approach to modern surgical techniques. 

His expertise in virtual surgical planning allows for precise, patient-specific procedures using advanced technologies. 

He developed and patented the Oral Capnography Accessory, a groundbreaking device that improves capnography monitoring and patient safety during oral surgery. He has received numerous design awards from the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, Inc. His clinical trial on the device was published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Schiappa also completed an observership through the Osteoscience Foundation, working alongside implant and bone grafting pioneer, Daniel B. Spagnoli, DDS, MS, PhD. 

This experience deepened his expertise in advanced dental implant and grafting techniques and complex reconstructions.

Specialization

Dr. Schiappa has extensive training in corrective jaw surgery and trauma to the facial skeleton, wisdom tooth removal, dental implants, and bone grafting. 

He specializes in dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, exposure and bonding of impacted teeth, extractions, bone grafting, and intravenous anesthesia (sedation dentistry). 

His biomedical engineering foundation enables him to incorporate cutting-edge technologies, including computer-assisted design (CAD/CAM), 3D printing, and virtual surgical planning, ensuring optimal outcomes for his patients.

He has co-authored six professional papers, and given presentations and abstracts on soft tissue regeneration, pathology treatment modalities, and trauma surgery at national and international conferences.

Originally from Chicago, IL, Dr. Schiappa enjoys exploring Colorado’s outdoor wonders with his wife and their son outside of his professional pursuits. 

He is passionate about hiking, skiing, visiting local breweries, and playing guitar. His family-oriented approach extends to his patient care, where he prioritizes personalized treatment and compassionate service.
