Wisdom teeth can cause pain, crowding, and infection when they do not have room to grow in properly. If you live in Boulder or nearby communities like Louisville, Lafayette, or Erie, the team at Foley & Le Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is here to help.

This blog explains why many people choose to have their wisdom teeth removed, how the procedure is performed, and what to expect during recovery.

Why Wisdom Teeth Are Often Removed

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars, usually emerging between ages 14 and 25. Most mouths do not have enough room to fit four extra molars. This lack of space can lead to:

  • Impaction
  • Pain and swelling
  • Infection or cysts
  • Damage to nearby teeth
  • Increased risk of decay

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed, but early evaluation allows your oral surgeon to recommend the most conservative, preventative option.

What Happens During Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom tooth extraction is a routine procedure performed in our office with sedation options available to keep you comfortable.

Step 1: Imaging and Planning

The surgeon uses X-rays and/or 3D scans to see the position of the tooth and nearby structures like nerves or sinuses.

Step 2: The Surgical Procedure

If the tooth has fully erupted, it is gently loosened and lifted from the socket. If the tooth is impacted or only partially erupted, a small incision will be made in the gum tissue. In some cases, the tooth is divided into smaller pieces to allow for easier and safer removal.

Step 3: Aftercare and Monitoring

You will be monitored as the anesthesia wears off, and your surgeon will review post-operative care instructions before discharge.

Wisdom Tooth Recovery

Most patients feel significantly better within 5 to 7 days, though full healing takes a few weeks.

Common symptoms after surgery:

  • Swelling in the cheeks or jaw
  • Soreness or mild bruising
  • Limited jaw movement
  • Small amounts of bleeding the first day

Home care tips:

  • Use cold packs: Apply to the cheeks for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling.
  • Stick to soft foods: Eat soup, smoothies, yogurt, and scrambled eggs.
  • Keep the area clean: Gently rinse with salt water after 24 hours.
  • Avoid straws and smoking: These can dislodge the blood clot and cause a dry socket.
